Serurubele Book Launch
13 September 2017
Serurubele (translated as butterfly from seSotho) was published in August 2017 by Modjaji Books, and launched in Johannesburg on 24 August. Serurubele is a "metapoetic debut collection that captures the cadences of Shoro’s fearless voice, her unassuming sense of humour, and her enthusiasm for an Afrocentric literary culture. The poet reflects on creativity, on the writing, reading and performance of poetry, exploring the language that structures it, the forces that inspire it and the transformation that follows our experience of it. Her words wander through personal relationships and politics, articulating ideas about masculinity, sexuality, blackness, colonialism and our connections to those we love".
This event is following the success of Koleka Putuma’s poetry book launch in April at the Gallery University Stellenbosch (GUS). The book, Collective Amnesia, was later prescribed as part of Stellenbosch University English Department curriculum. GUS enjoys an ongoing collaboration with InZync poetry. Curator of GUS, Valeria Geselev: “We are grateful to the people of InZync for introducing live poetry to GUS. This year we saw The Poetry Slam and Poetry for Peace workshop draw beautiful, young and critical people to engage in important conversations. Our aim is to construct an inclusive and inspiring public space in Stellenbosch, and poetry is a great tool for social cohesion”.
